It's indeed slow. I never noticed because I have

-- Line Wrapping.
buffer.wrap_mode = buffer.WRAP_WORD
buffer.wrap_start_indent = 2

in my .textadept/properties.lua to hide horizontal scroll bars and wrap
long lines (wrap_start_indent is optional of course).
Might be a workaround for you.
