Thanks for your ideas - problem solved. Both solutions worked, setting the
alpha value was actually exactly what I had in mind.

You could try experimenting with the caret line's alpha value, e.g. in
your properties.lua:
buffer.caret_line_back_alpha = 55

You might want to experiment with the alpha value to optimize for your
theme.
