Any idea what could be causing this? Is there a log or some other source of exception info I should be looking at?

Are you on Linux? Does the same thing happen in SciTE[1]? Both Textadept and SciTE use the Scintilla editing component. I'm wondering if Scintilla's GTK platform code cannot handle invalid UTF-8 bytes on the clipboard. (GTK is the GUI toolkit Textadept uses.)
