Thanks Robert and Mitchell,

I copied the lua module directory as you suggested, and only needed to
comment out a single line (line 11 of commands.lua:
"m_run.run_command.lua = 'lua %(filename)'") to work around the
problem, letting the definitions in init.lua take hold.
