And that's why writing big GUI programs in C is premature
optimization. Actually, #s isn't too slow, since Lua strings keep
their size internally (they have to because they can contain embedded
'\0'; they're basically immutable byte buffers.) It could be faster
than strlen(s) for big enough strings.
